Background of the Study:
Healthcare worker shortages are a critical issue affecting service delivery in many regions, including Gombe State. A shortage of qualified healthcare professionals can lead to overburdened facilities, longer wait times, and compromised patient care. In Gombe State, factors such as migration of skilled workers, inadequate training programs, and poor retention strategies contribute to the workforce deficit (Oluwaseun, 2023). These shortages are particularly pronounced in rural and underserved areas where access to medical care is already limited. The absence of sufficient healthcare personnel not only affects routine healthcare delivery but also hampers the ability to respond effectively to emergencies and outbreaks.
In addition to workforce shortages, the distribution of healthcare workers is often uneven, with urban centers receiving a disproportionate share of available professionals compared to rural areas. This inequity further exacerbates health disparities and leads to increased morbidity and mortality among vulnerable populations. The quality of care suffers when healthcare workers are overworked, which can result in burnout and further attrition from the workforce. Recent research has highlighted that addressing healthcare worker shortages is essential for improving the overall efficiency and quality of healthcare service delivery (Ibrahim, 2024). This study aims to investigate the impact of healthcare worker shortages on service delivery in Gombe State by examining the extent of the shortage, its effects on healthcare outcomes, and the potential solutions to mitigate this challenge (Fatima, 2025).
Statement of the Problem:
Gombe State is confronted with a severe shortage of healthcare workers, which significantly hampers the delivery of quality healthcare services. The limited availability of physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals has resulted in overcrowded facilities, prolonged waiting times, and a decline in the quality of care provided to patients (Umar, 2023). This shortage is particularly critical in rural areas, where the lack of skilled personnel means that residents often have no alternative but to rely on under-resourced health centers or seek care outside the state. The shortage not only affects routine service delivery but also undermines the state’s capacity to respond to public health emergencies and infectious disease outbreaks. The underlying factors contributing to the shortage include brain drain, inadequate training capacity, and poor working conditions that lead to low staff retention (Saleh, 2024). Consequently, the overall health outcomes in Gombe State remain suboptimal, and the burden on the healthcare system continues to grow.
